Give Something Up

Gretchen Rubin in her book The Happiness Project suggest buying some happiness by giving something up. She says happiness experts point out that merely making & sticking to a decision is a source of happiness because it gives you a feeling of control, efficacy, of responsibility. In times of financial stress taking control of your finances even symbolically  can boost your mood because you’re taking steps to control and improve your situation.

According to her some of the things that people gave up that lead to the most happiness gains were:

  • Swapping printed newspapers & magazines for on line versions.
  • Cancelling TV subscriptions
  • Bottled water
  • Sugar based snacks
  • Eating out on a any day other than a Friday or Saturday.
  • Online auctions such as Ebay
